It’s been a few weeks…
Twelve days to be exact. I haven’t written or blogged a word in that whole time. In that time, there’ve been some developments in my professional life, which is why I haven’t blogged. I moved back under my old boss and to full-time work at home status, which is very exciting. I’ve had a busier time this last week than in the three months prior and that is a good thing. I was commuting to Orlando with evening dinners some nights all week so I was totally drained when I got home. Now, though, it’s time to get back into it. I’m energized to keep working on my causal loop short story, Around the Corona, and am looking into C.S. Lakin’s Shooting Your Novel book to help me “cinematize” my framing when writing. I think that will go a long way toward improving my show-vs-tell dynamic.
Today, it’s a short blog just letting anyone out there reading this know that I’m back on the horse and happy to be here.
I had a wonderful conversation with my son today about a story he’s getting back into writing and we discussed a big question when planning what you’re writing: Why? Why does this need to happen? It’s cool, but WHY? Why does this character act this way? It’s devious and cunning and interesting, but WHY? Those are cool powers, but how does he feel about them, why does he treat them the way he does (and how is that)? They’re cool, but WHY?
I’m now finding myself asking the same question about my next novel set in Tarion Stratum, but the answers are pretty tight. This makes me happy because it makes me feel like I have visceral motivations which should make for a more interesting story to read and write.
For now, it’s back to the coal mines (coal is black, word processor text is black, so, coal mines, not salt). I’ll fill you in on my progress tomorrow. Cheers!
